Super Organisms that are super large & 1000s of years old
The Pando is the one of the largest super organism, it weighs 6,000,000 kgs. There are 47,000 trees in the colony, but it can be regarded as a single super large organism, as it shares a single root system which is 80,000 years old.
There are various clonal colonies like these, but Pando is largest single root clonal organism there is. Until the root system is completely dead, the plant will keep sprouting more trees for its survival. All the trees in the colony are clones of a single tree, making it almost a replica of others in the colony.
Siphonophores are the longest plankton. They live in huge colonies as a single complex animal.
The organisms not just live together, but are dependent on each other, they specialize in different functions and live together as one single large organism. They can grow over 50mtr in length and are longer than blue whales.
Neptune Grass or Mediterranean Tapeweed
Posidonia oceanica is one of the largest, slowest growing, and longest-lived plants.
In 2006 a huge clonal colony of neptune grass was discovered south of the island of Ibiza. At 8 km across and possibly up to 100,000 years of age, it may be one of the largest and oldest clonal colonies on Earth.
armillaria ostoyae colony largest organism in the world
Considered one of the worlds largest living organism, located in Oregon. Grows and spreads primarily underground, out of sight. Several species of fungi belong to the Armillaria genus, which is popularly known as honey fungus. They colonise and kill a variety of trees and woody plants.
This most recent find was estimated to cover over 2,200 acres (890 hectares) and be at least 2,400 years old, possibly older.
Kudzu ‘ The Vine that Ate the South’
Today kudzu covers about two million acres in the South and has been found throughout Florida. While this vine has been able to thrive in in unattended areas, you can do your part and keep kudzu off your property. With time, kudzu can be removed from an area and desired vegetation will be able to thrive. A single kudzu can extend to 100 feet in length, it can reproduce very easily through self cloning.
Climate in south facilitated the growth of kudzu as it became a “structural parasite” of the South, enveloping entire structures when untreated and often referred to as ‘vine that ate the south’.
The Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest living structure, but it consist of many species of organisms. It is a coral reef, which is considered to be a single living structure consisting of many different animals from many different species that depend on each other for their survival. It is visible from outer space.
